MADISON, WI (April 16, 2007) – The American Red Cross Mid-America Division relies on the generous hearts of nearly 370,000 volunteer blood donors and 8,300 volunteer blood drive coordinators. Without their constant dedication and drive, the Red Cross would not be able to ensure the gift of life is given to those who need it most. The Red Cross wants to extend its greatest appreciation to all volunteers by asking healthy, eligible donors to give blood in recognition of individuals who honor those in need.

National Volunteer Week is a chance to honor and thank one of America’s most valuable assets – volunteers. This year’s theme, “Inspire By Example”, truly embodies the spirit of a Red Cross volunteer. These volunteers spend countless hours giving blood, transporting blood from drives, greeting donors as they walk through the door, and sponsoring, even coordinating, blood drives. They continually give their time, talent and efforts toward making America a better place. On behalf of the countless patient lives volunteers have helped save, the Red Cross thanks you.

“Volunteers are a driving force of the American Red Cross,” said Tony Procaccio, CEO of the local Red Cross Blood Services. “Not only do they provide Red Cross presence in our communities, but they are also the local representatives who help spread the goodwill of the Red Cross throughout. Volunteers are the faces of this organization, the people who are there to fulfill the mission of the Red Cross.”

President Nixon declared the start of National Volunteer Week back in 1974 after signing an executive order establishing a week-long annual celebration in the name of volunteerism. It is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network.
