Madison, Wis. (Tuesday, January 29, 2008) – Each and every day, patients in our local community and around the country need blood. To help meet this ongoing need, the American Red Cross will be giving away a limited number of tickets at select blood drives for BODY WORLDS 1: The Original Exhibition of Real Human Bodies, opening January 18th for a limited engagement at the Milwaukee Public Museum, presented by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation.

The BODY WORLDS 1 exhibit features approximately 200 authentic human specimens, including entire bodies, individual organs and transparent body slices that have been preserved through the process of Plastination, a technique that replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics. BODY WORLDS offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see and understand our own physiology and health and to gain new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human.

By donating blood to the Red Cross, you can help provide the gift of life for patients in serious medical need. Blood is used for the treatment of cancer patients, people with blood disorders, premature babies, transplant recipients, trauma victims and so many more. In fact, approximately every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. All blood types are needed, especially type O negative. O negative blood is the “universal” blood type. It is commonly used for transfusions to trauma patients, especially when there isn’t time to determine the patient’s actual blood type.

Tickets to BODY WORLDS 1 can also be purchased online at www.mpm.edu, by phone at 414.278.2728 or in-person at the Milwaukee Public Museum’s box office, located in the main concourse.  More information can also be found at www.bodyworlds.com.

How to Donate Blood
Simply call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE (1.800.448.3543) or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. About the Red Cross
The Mid-America Division of the American Red Cross Blood Services supplies blood products to
nearly 250 hospitals in 10 states and across the nation. The Red Cross relies on the generosity of more than 370,000 volunteer blood donors, nearly 8,300 blood drive coordinators and more than 2,100 employees to collect the blood that helps save thousands of lives each year. The Mid-America Division is one of nine Red Cross Blood Services Divisions located throughout the United States. Together, these divisions collect nearly 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply.

About BODY WORLDS 1
BODY WORLDS 1 is a collaboration between donor, anatomist and visitor. It is the only public anatomical exhibition that relies on the generosity of body donors—individuals who willed that upon their death, their bodies could be used for the education of many. Excluding a small number of specimens from museum anatomical collections and anatomy programs, the plastinates on display stem from a body donation program begun in 1982 by Dr. von Hagens, now managed by the Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg. The exhibitions have now been seen by nearly 25 million people around the world. For more information, visit www.bodyworlds.com.
